As research and development efforts intensify in different areas of the multimedia computing, Multimedia Database Management Systems (MMDBMS) have increasingly attracted the attention of many research and development efforts in industry and academia. It has become evident that the true realization of Multimedia Information Processing depends on the ability to access and manipulate the multimedia objects which can adequately be done by multimedia database management systems.

IW-MMDBMS'99 is an international technical forum for active researchers and practitioners who are involved in various aspects of multimedia database management issues. The workshop will emphasize the issues relevant to designing, developing, and utilizing MMDBMSs. The paper presentations, panel, and working group discussions will address the following issues as they relate to MMDBMSs:

  • Multi-Media Database Modelling
  • Decomposition/Organization Strategies
  • Storage Structures and Techniques
  • Distributed Multimedia DBMS
  • Multimedia Database Applications
  • Multimedia Data Transmission
  • Multimedia Network Protocols and Infrastructures
  • Query Language Designs, Specifications, and Optimizations
  • Retrieval/Search Techniques/Strategies/Algorithms
  • Access Methods, Browsing, and Indexing Techniques
  • Multimedia Data Synchronization
  • QoS Delivery/Presentation Issues
  • Image Processing (Storage, Retrieval, etc.)
  • Conventional Database Compatibility Issues
  • Operating Systems Implications
  • System, Schema, and Functional Architectures
  • Meta-data Management
  • Performance Evaluation
  • Access Security Issues
  • Object-Oriented Paradigms

Information for Authors:
Authors are invited to submit papers where each paper should not exceed 25 double-spaced pages, including figures, pictures, etc. Each paper must include an abstract of about 200 words. Previously published papers will not be considered. Each author must clearly describe the nature of the work, significant contributions to the body of work, the novel features, and its current status.

Each paper will consist of two postscript files: one which contains the the full name, affiliation, phone numbers, e-mail address, and full mailing address of each author and also a contact author in the case of multiple authors; the other will be the paper itself.

If a paper is accepted, the author(s) are expected to prepare the final manuscript, as requested, in time for inclusion in the workshop proceedings. The workshop proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Press.

Paper submissions should be sent electronically or via snail to:
